Wae Rebo Harmony of Natural and Customary

Wae rebo is one of the amazing destinations that you need to visit. A remote village is now becoming more widely known. Even better known to the world than in his own country. Wae Rebo Village is located in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, precisely in the District of West Satarmese. The majestic mountains that surround it make this village isolated. This village presents experiences to visitors with authentic nuances with unique building designs, and daily life of local people

The new cone house is very unique. From the outside at a glance like an ordinary cone house. However, when viewed from within, this cone house has five floors. Each floor has a room with different functions. The first floor called lutur or tent will be used by the homeowner to carry out daily activities. The second floor called lobo is a place to store food or goods. The third floor, called Lentar, is a place to store the seeds of crops produced by farming. The fourth floor, called Lempa Rae, is a place to store food stocks that are useful when there are not enough crops. The fifth floor located at the top of the house is used to store various offerings of homeowners.

The uniqueness of Wae Rebo is what captures tourists. Thanks to its uniqueness too, Wae Rebo was declared UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in August 2012, setting aside 42 other countries.

How is access and transportation to Wae Rebo?

If we want to go to Waerebo, we have to go to Denge too. To get to Denge using public transportation, you have to start your journey from Ruteng, the capital of Manggarai Regency. There are direct flights to Ruteng from Denpasar, only not every day. It's easier to go to Labuan Bajo first before proceeding by bus or travel to Ruteng. Transportation from Ruteng to Denge or Dintor (Dintor is a village near Denge) is not much. There are bemos, like angkot, which operate not every day. What is available every day is wooden bibs, trucks whose backs are transformed with boards into passenger seats. There are only one or two wooden bibs that operate every day. They departed from Terminal Mena in Ruteng around 9 to 10 am. Arrive at Denge around 2pm Want more flexible time? You can use a motorcycle taxi, but you must be ready to wake up during the trip

Before heading to Wae Rebo, we have to stop in Denge or Dintor Village

In Dintor there is an inn called Wae Rebo Lodge. The owner is named Mr. Martinus Anggo, the original Wae Rebo person. Whereas in Denge, the last village before the trip to Wae Rebo, there is the Bljjus Monta Wejang Asih homestay - also the Wae Rebo person. Near the Wejang Asih homestay there is also the Wae Rebo Village Library and Information Center.

Mr. Blasius Monta and Mr. Martinus Anggo are two people who often promote Wae Rebo as a tourist place. They still have blood ties, exactly cousins.

A long, adventurous trekking to Wae Rebo

To start trekking towards Wae Rebo, you should leave early in the morning. Because, about 3-4 kilometers of the beginning of the trip was not covered by shady trees. If you start trekking during the day, the risk is to be stung by merciless sunlight.

If you oversleep, don't even choose to leave the night to avoid the sun. This is not allowed. The tracks that you will go through are labile and prone to landslides, so it is very dangerous if trekking is done at night. The initial 3-4 kilometers of the trip are enough roads to warm up. The slope is not too steep, and the road is quite wide. The next track is a path in the middle of a very lush forest. Several times the track is on the edge of a cliff that directly borders a very deep ravine. The road that you are going to pass continues to climb, until you reach a distance of 2400 meters before Wae Rebo. After that, you will find a flat road. Less than one kilometer from Wae Rebo, your road will go down and pass the coffee garden. Approximately 3-4 hours of trekking is needed to reach Wae Rebo. During the rainy season, trekking land will be very slippery and many will become a nest of leeches, so you should be more vigilant. Then the residents of Wae Rebo will greet you very kindly and have a very sweet smile.

Mbaru Niang was dying and almost extinct from Wae Rebo

Wae Rebo is famous for mbaru niang, aka a typical traditional cone-shaped house. Over the past few decades, there have been only four new villages in Wae Rebo Village. The remaining house was actually already dying, weathered with age. The community is no longer able to rebuild and equip it to seven houses as they should. The lack of costs is the main reason. In 2008 Yori Antar's group came together with their colleagues. They are architects who are curious about this traditional village in the interior of Flores. Only based on information from the internet and postcards with Wae Rebo's picture, they were so interested and determined to go there.

Tourism rescues Wae Rebo

Wae Rebo continues to improve in receiving guests. To organize the tourism administration they formed the Wae Rebo Tourism Institute (LPW). From this institution, the rate for staying overnight at Wae Rebo is Rp. 250 thousand, including 3 meals. If not staying, visitors pay a fee of Rp. 100 thousand. Some people find it too expensive to pay that much. But I think that amount of money is quite reasonable considering that the food we consume when there should be taken from the village below which is about 9 km more. They have to carry rice and other basic necessities to climb the mountain to get back to Wae Rebo.

Hospitality and warmth of the people of Wae Rebo made us feel like living in our own home. It's not difficult to fall in love with this village. Maybe this is also felt by tourists who have come to Wae Rebo. Fall in love and want to go back to Wae Rebo again, someday.
